He questions the local madrasahs teachings of Islam, where small kids are taught to learn arabic and recite Quran but not the meaning of the verses of the Quran. As a result majority of these kids end up being like a parrot only, recite but not understand. Of course it’s still better than not knowing how to read arabic, but reading with understanding is even better. And that should be the goal of every madrasah, not only in Singapore but worldwide. Because I believe this phenomenon is not just constrained to Singapore alone.
